History

Kashipur is one of the important places in the district of Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand .During Harsha’s reign (606-647 AD) when Yuan Chwang visited the region, Kashipur was known as ‘Govishana’.One can even today spot the remains of the old city in this place. Today, Kashipur is named after Kashinath Adhikari, one of the officers of the Chand dynasty and the founder of this place. Punjabi, Hindi and English are widely spoken in Kashipur. Uttarakhand is a place for most of the Gods and Kashipur has several temples dedicated to various Gods. Bhimshankar Mahadev is dedicated to Lord Shiva while Gurudwara Shri Nanakana Sahib is one of the auspicious holy places for the Sikhs. Maa Mansa Devi and Teerth Dronasagar is connected with the legendary teacher Guru Dronacharya of Mahabharata. According to Skand Puran, the water here is as holy and sacred as the Ganga.It was considered a very sacred spot after Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. This place occupied partially by pond which is in turn surrounded by temple of several deities. At one point of time there were as many as 32 temples surrounding pond. This place was visited by Swami Dayanand, the founder of Arya Samaj who even stayed there for some time. Chaiti Mela is the great fair that takes place in Kashipur. Kashipur today is famous because of its industries which has also led to the development of the region. Some of the main industrial estates here are Balaji Industrial Estate, Bheem Nagar Industrial estate, Omega Industrial estate and IDEB industrial estate. Among major tourist attraction are ruins of Harsha period evident from the Govishana fort, Tumaria Dam where you have migratory birds flocking to the place and of course the temple of Kashipur.

Chaiti Devi Temple: It is situated 2.5 km from Kashipur bus stand on the Kashipur –Bajpur route. Thousands of devotees visit this shrine during Navratras.

GURUDWARA SHRI NANKANA SAHIB: It is situated in Kashipur city Distt. U.S.Nagar Uttarakhand . The Dhela River used to cause havoc in the city by flooding each year. When SHRI GURU NANAK DEV JI reached this place, local people were on the verge of leaving this place for safer ground. GURU SAHIB told them to be patient and advised them to remain there only. Thereafter, on the riverside, he started singing kirtan. As the kirtan was in progress the river rose. GURU SAHIB performed the Ardas and the river, after touching GURU SAHIB Feet, receded, moved to a distance away from the town. It is said that since then, the river has never flooded the city again. It is also said that earlier the name of the river was Swaran River and that when GURU SAHIB threw a clod (Dhela) in to the river name of river was changed to Dhela River.

GIRI SAROVAR: The charming lake is about 2 km from kashipur bus stand. It is a beautiful spot ideal for camping and picnicking. There are many hotels and tourist rest houses over here.

JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK: It is the oldest national park of India named after Jim Corbett, a British hunter who gave up hunting. Corbett national park was founded in 1936 as Hailey national Park in the Nainital Distt of Kumaun region of Uttarakhand. The park covers an area of 521 sqkms. There are 488 different types of plants and over 585 types of birds and many species of animals. But the most important reason why tourists visit this place is tiger and herds of elephants. Jim Corbett National Park is situated 29 kms from Kashipur.
